第一个（高音）3是一个四分音符，第二个（高音）3下面有两个下划线，它是十六分音符，一个四分音符加上一个十六分音符是无法用一个符号写出来的，用附点的话也只能表示一个四分音符加上一个八分音符，例 3. 这种写法。
而作曲者要求这两个音要弹得连贯，中间没有停顿（即必须占用一个四分加上一个十六分音符的时值），所以用了连音符号。
紫河所举例的3--代表的示一个二分音符加附点的时值。
一般连音线有两种用法：如果是同一个音，要求弹奏时中间不断开；单独音的一个长音在一个小节里就只有一个全音符的时值，而连音线则可以跨小节表示，让这个音起到更长延时的作用。
如果是连接两个以上不同的音，则要求演奏中表现的连贯，无跳跃感。
